My granddaughter has been given this precious name - she was born March 12, 2009 and they had to reshape her head because she had such a hard time coming out of the birth canal - she looked just like a little olive at first LOL...but she was named long before she entered the world...we love her so much!" I'm in my 60's, was named after an Aunt, whom I loved dearly. I have known a number of wonderful "Olives" much older than I am as the name seems to have been more popular around 1900 and in Great Britain. Unfortunately I was teased unmercifully for having this name all through my school years because of the Popeye cartoon. I was tall and skinny and people would make that association to Olive Oyl even many adults I met. It's only just recently I've been okay with my name. Her full name is Olivia Carmela, but Olive is all she will go by, unless she decides when she is older that she prefers Olivia. We LOVE 'Olive' for her, and, of course, found Olivia to be too popular, but it went so well with the middle name, which was an absolute. I agree, most people our age love it, but anyone age 70+ seems to hate it. Recently, I took my little Olive to visit my grandmother (Olive's great grandmother), who is pushing 90, at her retirement home, and when I introduced Olive to all Grandma's peers, she quickly chimed in, "Well her name is OLIVIA, but they just call her Olive." I had to laugh at that and not take it too personally. We know it is a unique name, which is part of the attraction, and that we can't please everyone. I also find it to be peaceful, delicate, yet strong, original, yet timeless, and just as cute as a button - just like our Olive." (Report as inappropriate)
