User Comments about the name Kaia
Comment left Nov 08, 2008: "We named our daughter Kaia, the name popped into my head while walking the dog. Interestingly, the baby only every kicked and responded to that name - so we went with it! Her middle name is: Rei (pronounded Ray). We've gone with Kaia Rei meaning Pure of spirit and others seem to like it = but most importantly we love it!" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Nov 07, 2008: "My name is Kaia. I was born in 1955. My grandparents immigrated from Norway and my mom liked the name of my grandfathers Aunt Kaia. My grandmother was horrified as Kaia was an old womans name and not appropriate for a child. I have always loved my name but when I was a child I was teased a lot. My best friend adopted a dog 2 years ago and named her Kaia. I was always told that Kaia translated to Seagull or what the Seagull says but I know that it is Hawaiian, Japanese, Turkish and yes Rastafarian." (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Sep 16, 2008: "I was born in Estonia, and I bless my Mum for giving me a beautiful unique name. I am 67 years old and have never met another Kaia -only a few variants like Kai or Kaya.
An acquaintantce of mine told me she'd called her baby girl Kaia after me. Also named 'Kaia' after me is a cast iron statue in Uranquinty, NSW, Australia, of a migrant lady with her two small children and a suitcase.
However, what leaves a bad taste in the mouth, is when people hear my name, and then call their horse or dog Kaia!" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Sep 11, 2008: "I named my baby girl Kaia Avery..she was born August 15/08. I heard the name one day early in my pregnancy and just fell in love with it. It seems rare and so beautiful..although I'm meeting more and more people with the name these days!" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Sep 11, 2008: "My husband is of Estonian origin and we named our daughter Kaia because it was a family name. It is the Estonian variant of Katherine and we figured she could use Kate, Katy, etc. if she grew up to not like her name! She likes it so far though she has had to spell it for people since she was two!" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Sep 01, 2008: "My daughter's name is Kaia Sol. I loved the boy's name Kai and changed it to Kaia. Love it!" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Aug 25, 2008: "Just a correction, from a South Pacific Islander... Adding an "a" to the end of Kai - does not femenize it... it changes the meaning all together. Kai is already a unisex term, depending on the suffix added to it, is what appropriates gender.
Traditionally, Kai more than likely would not stand alone whether it was by suffix or the following name, an ocean/sea cannot stand on its own. It can be strong ocean, or whispering sea, magical waters... you get the point.
Aside from giving colonized names/surnames, naming your children is a lot more intricate than how it "rolls off the tongue".
As for people hearing it in a Bob Marley tune and naming a child after it... Bob was not referring to anything pure. That is, unless it was pure marijuana.
I'm not attacking anyone, just wanted to encourage a bit of free thinking on the part of soon-to-be parents. I'm not addressing the Swed/Norway meanings at all - b/c I clearly am not. I can only comment on the way people freely/randomly pick names based on how it sounds - as opposed to what it means and how it resonates for that child. They will carry the resonance/vibration forever... that is, if they don't decide to change their names altogether.
Think about it... would you like some kid named Moses to feel he has the right to part your daughter's red sea??? Or some other horney teenager wanting to see how "pure" your daughters' goods are???
Hope this posting helps :)" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Aug 21, 2008: "I named my youngest daughter Kaia in 2003, and I had never really heard the name before that. I have been surprised to meet a number of other Kaias in the past few years, 'though most of them spell it differently. So far, she loves her name. We think it is a beautiful and unique name for a beautiful and unique child." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Aug 15, 2008: "I absolutely love the name Kaia. I read once that it meant Diamon in the Sky...and African name. Now I read that it means Pure. It's still beautiful, though. I named my daughter Kaia Alena and she loves it. :)" (Report as inappropriate)
