the female form of the name is: Michele and
the male form is: Michel.
I always thought the Michelle's of the world were American. Now, I am not so sure. I am told by French-Canadians, Michelle is also common among francophones. Maybe it's a North American thing to spell it with two LLs. I don't know. I have never heard of it as being Italian before.

I used to wish I had a different name because I am of Italian heritage and didn't like having a French name but since I found out a couple years ago that my spelling is Italian I love my name. The only thing about it being different is that it's irritating when people don't get the spelling right...even when it's right in front of them in emails! Grrr! It's funny, because even though it's pronounced the same as "Michelle", I think of it as being a completely different name!! It's neat having a common name with an uncommon spelling, because you can tell which of your friends actually listen to you when you get birthday cards, etc from them :) I don't mind my name, but I prefer my sister's name; it's Hilary. There's just so many names that end with "ele". I do however, find the meaning of the name really special; "Who is like God." There is sooo much meaning behind that statement."
